Library Book Sale May 4-6

Friends of Elkins Public Library and the EPL Board of Directors are working together to host the Spring Book Sale, which is scheduled for May 4-6 at the Elkins Community Center.

Books and DVDs will be 50 cents each until Saturday, when they will be $2 per bag. Donations of gently used books and movies will be accepted at the library until Monday, May 1. This will allow volunteer time to box and sort the books.

The schedule: 

  • Thursday, May 4: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friends Members Only (you can apply for membership at the book sale)
  • Friday, May 5: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Open to the public
  • Saturday, May 6: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Open to the public

 

Writing Class May 13

The next monthly writing class at the Elkins Public Library with Author Linda Rigsbee is 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 13. Each class includes a lesson and then time for local writers to share their work for constructive critique. May's class will include how to format your book in Microsoft Word.

 

EABN After Hours May 4

The next Elkins-Area Business Network (EABN) networking event will be 6pm, Thursday, May 4, at Reliable Bookkeeping and Tax Prep (2687 Hollybrooke Drive). These meetings are quarterly and are designed for local business professionals and community leaders to get to know each other better and learn more about business in our community.

 

Senior Chili Supper May 19

The Elkins Senior Wellness & Activity Center is hosting a chili supper at the center 5:30pm to 8:30pm on May 19. The cost is $8. There will be a silent auction of items and desserts. Donations are welcome. Please contact the center for more information.

 

Boy Scouts Twilight Camp

The local Boy Scouts will be participating in Twilight Camp June 19-22 at Saint Joseph Catholic School in Fayetteville 5:30-8pm. All students going into grades 1-5, including non-scouts, can attend. Girl Scouts Camp NOARK

The local Girl Scouts Camp in Huntsville will host four weeks of Camp NOARK this summer. Activities include hiking, games, swimming, outdoor cooking, crafts, target sports, horses and more! It’s all just fun and games to her, but Girl Scout camp and outdoor programming has short- and long-term benefits to help your girl navigate her world, now and in the future.

Graduations this month

The youngest and oldest students in the Elkins School District will have graduation ceremonies in May. Elkins High School announced that the Class of 2023 will graduate at 7pm, May 19, at the Elkins Football Field. Kindergarten Graduation (class of 2035) will be 6:30pm, Thursday, May 18, in the Main Gym at Elkins Primary School.

 

FBCE Yard Sale May 6

The First Baptist Church of Elkins Youth Group will host their annual yard sale at 6am on Saturday, May 6, at the church. All proceeds go to support their summer missions.

 

PCPS offers text donations

The Paws and Claws Pet Shelter now offers text donations to help raise funds for animal care, including vet bills and food. You can text PCPS to 89871 to make a donation. Contact the Shelter for more information.

 

Camp Rescue applications due

The 21st Annual Camp Rescue event is coming June 19-23. This program, for students ages 15-18, helps provide awareness of the careers of public safety. It is a joint effort between the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Central EMS. The camp will begin on the third full week of June. Applications must be in by May 30. RMCC to host backpack giveaway

Round Mountain Community Church will host its annual backpack giveaway at 9am, Saturday, July 22. This event is for grades K-12 and includes free backpacks, food, games, clothes, haircuts, and inflatables! Donations of money, new backpacks and school supplies are welcome. Please contact the church for more information. Recipients must pre-register starting July 1 at www.rmccofnwa.com.

 

Wesley Community Center meeting May 13

There will be a Wesley community meeting at 6pm, Saturday, May 13 at the community center to discuss how to make the necessary upgrades on the building to keep it as a voting center. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs for a donation or $5 a meal.

 

Elkins Youth Football signups

Online registration for Elkins Youth Football has begun and is available at https://forms.gle/xaoWwmaD6wPb9vTM6. In-person registration will be announced soon on Facebook. Practices start in August. This program is for grades 1-6 and all participants must either live in the Elkins School District or be a student in the district.

 

Goshen Free Little Library

There is a new free little library and activities box at the Story Tree at Mill Branch in Goshen. If you have children’s books, art supplies, or nature books, please bring them to the little library.

Tech students hosting gift card raffle

Members of the Elkins High School Technology Student Association will be attending National Conference in June and are raising money to afford registration and travel expenses. The TSA has students competing in Fashion Design & Technology, Photographic Technology, and Video Production. They also have a state officer attending to represent Arkansas.

The fundraiser is a gift card raffle with these following prizes:

  • Mechanic / Automotive Raffle includes at least $100 total in gift cards to O'Reilly Auto Parts, Justus Cabinets, and more.
  • Restaurant /Shopping Raffle includes at least $100 total in gift cards to Sonic, Nellie B's, Mayfield Mercantile, and more!

Tickets are $2 per ticket or 3 tickets for $5. See a TSA member to buy tickets or contact Katie Kunz at kkunz@elkinsdistrict.org. Tickets can be purchased via Venmo @kkunz002 - please state your name and which raffle you would like to enter! Winners will be announced on May 9.

Summer academy needs gardening speakers, supplies

The Elkins Summer Academy will include STEM projects centered around gardening/growing flowers, so they are in need of guest speakers on planting and donations of flowers that will grow in front of the school building. There are a few specific items they need for projects; if there's anyone who would like to donate product/time, they may contact Jerri Foster at jfoster@elkinsdistrict.org

 

Wesley Fire Department Poker Run

The Wesley Fire Department is hosting an ATV poker run fundraiser 10am to 1pm, Saturday, June 3. Registration starts at 8am with the last hand in by 1pm. Lunch will be at 1pm. Each hand is $20. Prizes are for the first and second best hands.

 

Blood Drive June 7

The American Red Cross will host a blood drive 1pm to 5pm, Wednesday, June 7, at the Elkins Community Center. Visit https://www.redcrossblood.org/ and input 72727 where it offers the ability to “Find a Drive.”
