New billing at Water Department

If you are a City of Elkins Water Department customer, you received a letter in the mail about a change to the billing practices. As a reminder, as of August 1, 2023, your ACH with the city will no longer function as the city is moving to NexBill Pay for all its billing. If you want to continue having your water bill automatically taken out every month, you need to sign up at https://new.nexbillpay.net/elkinswdar. If you have questions, contact the Water Department.

 

Writing Class July 8

The next monthly writing class at the Elkins Public Library with Author Linda Rigsbee is 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 8. Each class includes a lesson and then time for local writers to share their work for constructive critique. The July class will have a creative writing photo prompt from an object. Bring something you wrote and read it (no more than a few pages). Reading not only presents opportunities for feedback, but it inspires others as well.

 

 

Community Dances in July

There will be three community dance nights at the Elkins Community Center in July. All dances start at 7 and the entry cost is $7. The schedule is Country XPress on July 7, Red Dirt Duo on July 14, and Country XPress on July 28.

 

Heritage School in July

Heritage School will be held on the Headquarters House Museum grounds the week of July 17, with a second session the week of July 24. Each session will be held from 9am to 1pm that Monday through Friday. This event is for kids ages 8 and older. Cost is $120 for one student and $80 for any additional siblings. Deadline to register is July 6, 2023

 

This year's activities include making historic toys, foraging and learning about the many uses of historic plants, processing raw fiber into woven fabric, learning historic dances along with many more fun activities. Students will also learn about the Tebbetts family, who lived in Headquarters House at the start of the Civil War. This event will take place at Headquarters House Museum at 118 E Dickson St, Fayetteville.

 

Healthy snacks and drinks will be provided each day. Snacks, all supplies and a one-year student membership to the Washington County Historical Society are included in the price of enrollment.

Backpack Giveaway July 22

The Round Mountain Community Church and Living Faith Church are hosting their annual backpack giveway 9am to noon, Saturday, July 22, at the Elkins Community Center. The giveaway is first come, first serve, and no reservations are required. One backpack per child and the child must be present. The event includes free backpacks, school supplies, clothing, and haircuts. There will also be free hotdogs and inflatables. Contact RMCC for more information.

 

 

Miss Purple Elk Pageant Aug. 12

Miss Purple Elk is a beginner-friendly pageant with low contestant numbers and low entry fee. The event is 11am, Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Elkins Community Center. There are multiple age divisions starting at Baby Miss (0-12 months) to Ms. Purple Elk (20 and older. Entry fee is $45 and there will be a donation to the Balance Dance dance program. Harry Potter event July 29

Friends of Elkins Public Library will hold their next member and board meeting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at the Library. They will be making final plans for Harry Potter Day, which is 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 29. It will include a Harry Potter movie, crafts, and concessions. The event will be at the Elkins Community Center.

 

EABN Networking Aug 3

The next Elkins-Area Business Networking Group meeting will be 6pm, Thursday, Aug. 3, at Oxford Family Farms (17984 Hames Rd., Fayetteville, AR 72701). Bring your business cards and ideas for growing business.

 

In addition to our normal networking, ECN will also be celebrating our 2nd anniversary, so save some room for cake.

Robotics hosting July sessions

The Elkins Robotics Electronics Club (EREC) will be hosting two one-week robotics/electronics camps this summer. Camp 1 (July 10-14) is for new students or those who have completed less than one year of the weekly Tinker Squad program at the Elkins Public Library. Geared toward students having completed 2nd through 6th grade, students will build playdough circuits, basic electronics circuits and be introduced to programming in Python. Camp 2 (July 24-28) will be for returning Tinker Squad and EREC members. Both camps will meet from 4 to 6pm Monday through Friday at the Elkins Public Library. Durham Revival July 9-12

Durham Free Will Baptist Church will host a revival starting 10:45am, Sunday, July 9. There will also be a 5pm service that same day, and a service at 7pm Monday, July 10, through Wednesday, July 12, at the church.

Madison County Rodeo July 29

The Madison County IPRA Rodeo will be 6:30pm, Saturday, July 29, at Sky High Arena in Huntsville. Gates open at 5pm.

 

Wesley Community Center fundraiser

There will be a fundraiser for renovations to the Wesley Community Center at the center at 5pm, Saturday, July 15. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be sold for $5 per plate. There will be water slides, cornhole, and horseshoes.

 

Senior Center Yard Sale

The Elkins Senior Wellness and Activity Center will host a yard sale 10am to 2pm, Saturday, July 15, at the center. They will also be selling hot dogs. The center is accepting gently used items at the center during regular business hours for them to put in the sale.

 

Craft N Chat July 22

The next community craft n chat will be 1pm to 5pm, Saturday, July 22, in the community room at Elkins Public Library. Feel free to bring your own snacks and your latest crafting project (from knitting to scrapbooking to everything in between!).

 

West Fest Car Show Sept. 9

The Rust and Rubies Car Club will host the West Fest Car Show on Sept. 9 in West Fork. There is a $20 entry fee and a wide variety of categories to enter. Registration is 8am to 10am and the parade lineup is at 9am with the parade starting at 10am. The West Fork Fire Department will be selling pancakes 6am to 9am. The event is at 262 W. Main St.
