Artchella April 27

The annual Artchella Fine Arts Festival will be 10am to 2pm, Saturday, April 27, at Elkins High School. The fundraiser for the arts department will include local artisan booths, open mic, a K-12 art show, food, community, and more. 

 

Business/Project updates

There are several business and project related updates from around the community. Do you have business or project news? Please make sure we know about it so we can include it in our monthly newsletter! 

  • Wish List Travel will host its monthly Passports to Pastries on April 27 at Nellie Bs. Specifics on how to reserve pastries and attend will be available on both business’ Facebook page. 
  • A new clothing store will open Saturday, April 13, in the Hollybrooke building. Gladrags Clothing Thrift will sell new and pre-owned men’s and women’s clothing. Accessories will include purses, shoes, and jewelry. The jewelry will include some sterling, costume, and some vintage costume. The hours will be 11am to 6pm, Thursday and Friday, 9am to 2pm on Saturday, and 11am to 2pm on Sunday. 
  • White River Nursery will host a springtime herbs workshop at 4pm, Sunday, April 14. Participants will learn more about what herbs grow this time of year! Janice Neighbors and Annie Sales will be there to share their combined wealth of knowledge on growing, using and preserving herbs for many uses from culinary to medicinal.

First Fridays begin April 5

The first First Friday this year is Friday, April 5, from 4 to 7pm at Bunch Park. The fee to set up is $5 each month. There will be vendors, food, and community fellowship! Contact Caitlin Tannehill Oxford (479) 200-6845 for more information.

Swap Meet April 12-13

The Rust and Rubies Car Club will hosts its 2nd Annual Swap Meet 8am to 4pm, Friday and Saturday, April 12-13. There will be a pancake breakfast 7:30am to 9:30am and a burger lunch 11am to 1pm, both are $7. The event will be at 122 St. Highway 45 in Goshen. Vendor spots are still available for $25. Crawfish Boil

Women’s Conference April 13

Crosses Community Church will host a women’s conference called Garden of “Weeden” 10am to 2pm, Saturday, April 13, at the church. It will include special speakers, a seed exchange, fellowship, and a potluck. 

Crawfish Boil April 6

The Goshen United Methodist Church is hosting the 15th Annual Crawfish Boil and Car/Bike Show 4pm to 7pm, Saturday, April 6, at 122. E. Bowen Blvd. in Goshen. The car/bike show is free and a chicken dinner will also be available. 

 

Farmers Markets to open 

The Elkins Farmers Market will open for the spring/summer season at 3pm, Tuesday, April 2. The market will be 3pm to 6pm every Tuesday and Thursday at Harris Baptist Church. 

The Goshen Farmers Market will be open every Thursday starting May 9th from 5-7:30pm at the Goshen Community Building.  

 

School Choice applications due May 1

 

School choice applications are due Wednesday, May 1, 2024, for the 24-25 school year.  Interested parents or guardians should submit a completed application to the Elkins School District Administration Office. The Public School Choice Act of 2015 allows students to attend a public school in Arkansas that is different from the school district in which the family resides. School Choice applications for the 2023-2024 school year are now being accepted at Elkins School District.

 

Please be advised that school choice applications are time and date stamped when they are received, and applications will be accepted in chronological order based on the available space in the necessary grade level and academic program. Families interested in completing a School Choice application should do so immediately, as space is filling up quickly in numerous grade levels. Applications can be picked up and submitted at the Elkins School District administration office. Wesley FD poker run 

The Wesley Fire Department will host its 2nd Annual ATV Poker Run 8am to 5pm, Saturday, June 1. It will include food, riding, fun, and fellowship.

 

Dance dates announced

A local group of citizens are working to keep the country dances going at the Elkins Community Center starting in April. The dances will be $10 per person and start at 7pm. A local couple will offer free dancing lessons at the first break. The upcoming dance dates are: April 12, May 10 and 24, June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26, August 9 and 23, September 13 and 27, October 11, November 8 and 22, and December 7 and 27. The band will be CountryXpress. 

 

Naturals Game Fundraisers

At least two groups in our community are raising funds by hosting a game night at the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. 

Members of the 7th - 12th Grade Band will sell tickets through Thursday, April 5, for the 6:05pm game on April 6. The band will perform on the field before the game at 5:30. Purchase your ticket from any of those band members for $9 apiece and a portion of the ticket sale will go to the band program! As a bonus - there will be a fireworks show after the baseball game. 

The City of Elkins Sports program is selling tickets to the 7:05pm, June 21, Naturals game. The deadline to purchase tickets is June 7. Up to half the proceeds benefit the sports programs. 

 

School schedule change

Due to weather closings, the 2023-2024 calendar has been converted to an Alternative Calendar. This changed the last day of school to May 22.The alternative calendar is posted on the district website https://trst.in/aEXjvT

 

New School App

The Elkins School District has a new app for both Android and iPhone. The app offers news, events, notifications, and other information parents and guardians might need. 

 

Friends of EPL book sale

The Friends of Elkins Public Library will host its annual spring book sale May 16-18 at the Elkins Community Center. Thursday is open 10am to 6pm for Friends members only. Friday is also 10-6 and the sale is open to the public. Saturday is 10am to 2pm. All items are $1 each until Saturday, when the cost drops to $2 per bag. Proceeds from the sale benefit Friends and the organization’s programs for the library. Information about donating to the sale is in this newsletter’s Ways to Serve section. 

 

City Cleanup May 3-4

The Annual City of Elkins Spring Cleanup will be 8am to 4pm, May 3-4. Bring a copy of your water bill for proof of residency. Information on acceptable items is available on the Elkins Water Department Facebook page. 

 

Citywide Yard Sale

The Elkins Citywide Yard Sale is April 25-27. No permit is required during those days to host a garage sale. Please be sure to clean up any signs you put out to promote your sale. 

 

Community Survey Coming 

Elkins Community Network, the City of Elkins, and representatives from the Elkins Public Schools, Elkins Business Community, and many other community leaders are partnering to plan and distribute a community survey. The survey will ask people within the city limits and/or the school district about their thoughts on Elkins and its future. The survey will be available online and likely also in print. We will share more information along with our partners about how to complete the survey as soon as information is available. 

 

Eclipse parties April 8 

There will be at least two solar eclipse watching parties in the region on April 8. Elkins Public Library will host a party 11:30am to 1:30pm at Bunch Park. They will have free eclipse viewing glasses, crafts and activities, and concessions for sale. Terra Studios will be open 10am to 5pm that day and the eclipse is expected to be noon to 3pm. They will have solar viewing glasses available.
